Collège La Justice, Cergy
The existing Collège La Justice in Cergy, France, near Paris, is to be replaced by a new building to meet the current needs and requirements of a secondary school for a total of around 800 pupils.
The challenge here was to ensure the continuity of the school's activities by maintaining the existing building until completion of the new building in 2026, and then to create space for the future outdoor facilities. This is made possible by locating the new building on the southern part of the site.
The compact building has a clear and functional design language and is based on the concept of an modular timber construction with a high degree of prefabrication. The competition design focuses on integration, participation and sustainability.
The three wings of the building are arranged windmill-like around the central communal areas and organise all the rooms for school activities on three floors. The auditorium, which is partly two-storey, provides a spatial link and generosity. The outdoor facilities follow the principle of windmill zoning. They follow the natural course of the terrain in terraced levels, creating different learning, play and sports areas that are available to the surrounding residential area for leisure activities outside school hours.
