"Culinacum" Town Museum, Andernach
At the eastern entrance to the Old Town, next to the late Roman fort wall and the round tower, a new town museum, the "Culinacum", is to be built, which will combine over 2000 years of town history with aspects of food history. Spatially, it serves as a new link between the historic town centre, the Rhine parks and gardens and the surrounding area.
On the south side, the three-storey museum building blends in with the existing buildings, while on the north side a passageway along the town wall remains. A small museum garden and a larger municipal park flank the complex.
The main entrance to the museum is via the museum courtyard. The foyer leads to the two functional areas of the museum - a public area and a working area. To the north of the foyer, there is a central information and ticket office area, as well as an open co-working and cafeteria area. In the centre, as a positioned showcase, is the viewing depot with the museum library. The depot and workshop area is located in the northern part of the building - a shop window facing the street offers a glimpse behind the scenes of the museum.
The design incorporates typical elements of the historic town layout and creates new, meaningful connections between the existing and the contemporary.
