Renovation with Integrity
At the residence of the German Embassy in Canberra, the existing structure is treated with respect and a clear vision for a sensitive and measured renovation—one that preserves quality, retains substance, and carries forward the architectural identity rather than imposing radical change.
While the chancellery requires a new building due to security considerations, the residence will largely maintain its external appearance. Its articulated composition, delicate roof structures, and integration with the landscape are further developed in the design.
Key elements—such as the horizontal, additive composition of the main and auxiliary buildings with their prominently cantilevered, filigree roofs, as well as the chancellery’s vertical pilasters—are reinterpreted, refined, and combined into a new architectural ensemble. The new construction is composed of a three-storey main building and a two-storey wing. These are staggered in height and placement, interwoven into one another. Together with the existing structures, the new volumes create a cohesive architectural language that continues into the landscape design.
Architectural references link the old with the new, resulting in a harmonious ensemble. Filigree, layered roof structures mediate between the residence, chancellery, and guardhouse. Outdoor spaces and pergolas with greenery or photovoltaic modules complement the design—visible, natural, and seamlessly integrated with a climate-conscious approach.
