Construction of a new multi-purpose hall and cultural centre, and design of outdoor facilities

The ensemble, consisting of the new multi-purpose hall, the historic barn and the adjacent squares, creates a new urban context that connects Onex's old and new towns. Together with the two neighbouring churches, it forms a harmonious urban composition.

The multifunctional hall opens onto the outdoor space via a transparent foyer and open arcades, while the folded roof is supported by Y-shaped columns, which are derived from the roof's geometry. The cantilevered roof creates a multifunctional space that connects the inside and outside areas. This sculptural design gives the 'Salle Polyvalente d'Onex' its distinctive character as an 'urban foyer'. The structural and spatial concept is based on strong flexibility. This ranges from a ‘black box’ to a permeable structure, making it suitable for a variety of cultural events.

The historic barn, close to the restaurant, will be preserved and restored, with a functional extension added. A shared roof will connect the old and new sections. The original barn's solid base and wooden structure are largely retained and continued in the new timber-framed building. The two buildings, the barn and the restaurant, which differ in size and character, will create new urban spaces and enter into dialogue with the urban context.
