Pina Bausch Centre, Wuppertal
Above the base structure, the circular structure of the new building rises over three upper floors, entering into a direct dialogue with the object-like solitaire of the Schauspielhaus. The new basement extends the projecting single-storey foyer area of the existing building and also flows around the existing theatre. As a connecting element, it creates a unity between the existing and new buildings. The softly rounded form follows the course of the River Wupper with its distinctive suspension railway and reinforces the newly designed open space in the south of the Kulturinsel.
The generously proportioned foyer allows for spatial and visual permeability and creates a link between the forecourt to the north and the banks of the River Wupper to the south. The multifunctional rooms and the studio stage inside can be flexibly opened and connected to the various foyer areas.
The "Kitchen" with its serving counter will be a central point of contact and communication at the interface between the old and new buildings, and the terraces in front of it will offer guests and employees an attractive outdoor area with a reference to the upgraded river bank.
The areas of the dance theatre, the Pina Bausch Foundation, the production centre and the Wupperbogen participatory forum are arranged one above the other on different levels, thus enabling a lively mix of different uses.
