1st prize for new sports campus in Clermont-Ferrand (F)
The competition brief asked for creating a new identity for the velodrome, built in 1922, as well as its neighborhood. Taking into account the site's historical significance and the way it is positioned within the city, our design proposes turning the premises into a sports park which relates to the city and, at the same time, helps to increase the significance of Clermont-Ferrand in a wider region.
On the pentagonal site, several independent functions are grouped around a central area: the main entrance with a green parking lot, a tree-lined path, an "adventure wood", an orchid garden, a tennis area with six tennis halls and a club house, the soccer and rugby stadium as the central element, which, along with with the encircling running tracks and long-jump areas, forms an oval. A distinguishing mark for the new sports campus will be the "cloud stand" for over 1,600 spectators. It will house spaces for administration, temporary exhibitions, common and locker rooms, and technical facilities. The campus will also provide a trail complete with fitness equipment, a skate park, several different sports halls with lookout terraces, and a multifunctional sports center.
