3. Award for the new Pina Bausch Zentrum building
The winning entry in the competition for the design of the new Pina Bausch Zentrum building in Wuppertal has been chosen. We are very pleased that the jury was impressed with our design and awarded us third place.
The jury report states:
"With just a few elements, the work succeeds in formulating a striking urban design in a very heterogeneous context. The base of the foyer is softly extended and forms high-quality outdoor/urban spaces towards the Sopp'scher Pavilion and the Wupper River. On top of the base is a three-storey, cylindrical structure as a large-scale urban form with references to the curved facade of the existing building. (…)"
The new Pina Bausch Zentrum is to be built on the so-called "Culture Island" at the Wupperbogen in the centre of Wuppertal's Elberfeld district. The dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch (1940–2009) is considered a pioneer of modern dance theatre. Since 1973, the artist has created a new, revolutionary style as director of the Tanztheater Wuppertal, which has set standards worldwide and led the ensemble to the highest international successes. In the future, the new Pina Bausch Zentrum will be a lively, creative place for art and encounters and will include the listed Schauspielhaus Wuppertal and the Sopp'scher Pavilion and connect all three buildings into a new whole.
Three winning designs were selected from the international two-stage competition. First place went to the architectural firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro from New York and second place went to Hascher Jehle Design GmbH from Berlin.
We would like to thank mk.landschaft for their cooperation.
