General renovation and extension of the Münchner Stadtmuseum

On 7 January 2024, the Münchner Stadtmuseum closed its doors for the next few years. The museum complex is being prepared for the future, both structurally and conceptually, and will be extensively rebuilt and renovated.

To mark the closure, a press conference was held at the Münchner Stadtmuseum on 17 January, where Moritz Auer presented our design. Also discussed were the topics of renovation, the duration of the closure and the planned programme of works.

The major challenge in the general renovation and conversion of the Münchner Stadtmuseum is reconciling the protection of a historical monument with the future requirements of a modern museum building. The focus is on the respectful handling of the historically evolved existing building and the careful addition of new elements.

Moritz Auer: "The general refurbishment will implement a design that combines heritage conservation with future needs. The courtyard of the Gsaenger Wing, which will be covered in the future, will become a multifunctional museum lobby and is designed as an extension of the public space. The openness, accessibility and tangibility of the site will give it a new identity and interweave the museum with the surrounding urban spaces. The redesign of the exhibition areas, with the cube as an eye-catcher and new focal point, will enable the flexible spatial and functional reorganisation of the museum."

The speakers at the press conference were:

Anton Biebl, Cultural Officer of the City of Munich, Edwin Grodeke, Representative of the Municipal Officer of the City of Munich, Dr. Jeanne-Marie Ehbauer, Building Officer of the City of Munich, Moritz Auer, Architect and Managing Director of the Auer Weber office in Munich and Dr. Frauke von der Haar, Director of the Münchner Stadtmuseum.
