Bildungscampus – master plan and urban development concept
In recent years, Heilbronn, a major city in Baden-Württemberg, has established itself as an up-and-coming city of education and knowledge with almost 10,000 students. Essential to this development was the expansion of its educational campus, called the Bildungscampus, according to an urban master plan drawn up by Auer Weber in 2013. To date, the architects have realised a total of nine buildings on this basis, which have expanded the campus in several construction stages to include the central and northern areas. The urban planning concept is based on two car-free main axes that cross the site as public spaces and link them with the surrounding areas. These axes are designed as a sequence of scaled paths, squares, green spaces, meeting points and retreat areas that divide the campus into small sections, and together with the densely packed new buildings create urbanity. Urbanity is also created by the buildings, which are diverse in terms of their volumes and architectures and thus create a feeling of belonging thanks to the related architectural language.
