Mechanical Engineering Campus, Garbsen

The new campus consists of 11 mechanical engineering institutes, laboratories, workshops and experimental bays as well as lecture halls, a library and a refectory. The architecture, although ancillary to the park-like open space at the centre, interacts closely with it. The facades of the institute buildings form a boldly articulated, robust framework with continuous colonnades, whereas the refectory and lecture hall structures are linked with the external realm by large areas of glazing. Strengthened by their colouration and material concept, the free-standing building volumes form a harmonious ensemble that implements the idea of synthesis.
