Design for Düsseldorf Central Station

The City of Düsseldorf and DB Station&Service AG jointly launched a competition for Konrad-Adenauer-Platz and its surroundings. The jury awarded two first prizes, one for the station square (implementation part) and one for a high-rise building north of the reception building (idea part). After a negotiation process, the City of Düsseldorf awarded the contract to the winner of the implementation part. DB Station&Service AG also awarded contracts for feasibility studies - to the competition winner for the high-rise building, Mono Architekten, as well as to Auer Weber, since "the extraordinary idea for restructuring the reception building particularly impressed the competition jury."

The concept provides for the preservation of the listed facades of the reception building and the clock tower. They give the square its character and will continue to form the familiar face of Düsseldorf Central Station in the future. The building parts behind them have already been rebuilt and adapted several times. This is an opportunity to redesign the reception building in a future-oriented and efficient way to meet the expectations of a modern transportation hub.
