Secondary school Helen Keller, Munich
The 2-stream secondary school Helen Keller (1992, also by Auer Weber), an exemplary school building at the time of its construction, is to be developed into a 6-stream secondary school in line with demand. For this purpose, a new, additional school building with four streams, a cafeteria, a triple sports hall with underground parking and new service rooms including a clubhouse for the district sports facility will be built. The four new streams will be designed according to the principle of the Munich Learning House.
The prominent position of the existing building on the site sets the framework for the creation of a new education and sports campus as an urban unit in Munich's Oberföhring district. The existing north-south longitudinal wing, with its three pavilion-like classrooms in front and to the east, mediates between the urban and landscape spaces. A common base connects the three components - the existing building, the new building and the sports hall. This green connecting base mediates between the higher street levels and the lower inner courtyard and green space. The arrangement of the buildings along Fürkhofstrasse in the west and Johanneskirchnerstrasse in the north allows for the preservation of as much open space as possible within the site and optimises the sealed surfaces from a climate-ecological point of view.
The overall design follows the City of Munich's guidelines for sustainability and energy efficiency, as well as the goals of climate-neutral construction.
