Office commercial building Königstraße 45
In the 1950s, architect Paul Stohrer built the striking Hofbräueck on the upper Königstraße in Stuttgart. As part of its extensive restoration, efforts will be made to preserve the existing building fabric and its diverse design principles. Large parts of the ceiling structures will be retained, and a new stair and elevator core inserted into the existing structure. The facade adaptation reinterprets the existing design principles: the in-situ concrete pilaster strips, which are untenable for building physics reasons, will be replicated in fibreglass concrete, the curtain-wall coloured surfaces will become parapets, and the rods will become harness aids for the facility management. The building's upper section, the concrete roof structure, has been demolished and will be rebuilt in steel. Facing Königstraße, the existing commercial units will be combined in a newly formed base for café/restaurant use. Once restored, the Kö 45, still owned by its original builder, will offer flexible use and energy efficiency, and be ready for the next decades.
