Stuttgart Suburban Rail Depot

On the edge of an industrial estate surrounded by fields, a green roof will shelter the new depot for the U13 suburban rail line in the Stuttgart suburb of Weilimdorf. The three areas beneath the roof - a large storage hall, another hall used as a workshop and a small service building for the employees - are gently integrated into the surrounding hilly landscape thanks to their shape and location. A translucent facade made of profiled glass helps to create a bright atmosphere in the interior. Light and natural materials, such as the planned timber structure, reinforce this character. At the same time, the uniform, dematerialised facade changes its appearance both during the day and night. The cantilevered roof embraces the individual structures and acts as a connecting element between nature and technology. A landscape roof is created by means of various structured surfaces. A new, protected habitat for plants and animals, which offers a variety of habitats for insects and birds compared to the surrounding, largely cleared fields.
