We are very much looking forward to building the new University of Applied Sciences for Police and Public Administration in North Rhine-Westphalia (HSPV) in Herne together with Hochtief and Rainer Schmidt Landschaftsarchitekten + Stadtplaner. The new site of the University of Applied Sciences for Police and Public Administration in North Rhine-Westphalia (HSPV) in the newly developed Funkenberg Quarter in Herne will accommodate 5,000 students on 32,000 square metres. Last Monday, the plans were presented at a press conference. "This is an important day in the history of Herne," said Mayor Dr. Frank Dudda, explaining: "As of today, Herne will be added to the list of German university towns and cities." The first students are expected to enrol at the university in Herne in the winter semester of 2027. "A state-of-the-art campus will be built that combines teaching and administration," explains Martin Bornträger, president of the University of Applied Sciences for Police and Public Administration in North Rhine-Westphalia. The new university campus consists of three buildings, all accessible via a common plaza, which is the focal point of the campus and is intended to contribute to a culture of togetherness. The project encompasses the construction of the lecture halls, administration building, dining hall, library, multi-purpose rooms and 1,200 parking spaces on the university campus.

On Saturday 15 July, a total of 24 teams competed in the Coppa Oliva, the Munich soccer tournament for architects, in high summer temperatures. The coveted trophy was played for on FC Teutonia's soccer field in Munich's Olympic Park. In addition to the numerous players who gave their best despite the heat, many fans and guests gathered to watch the exciting tournament and cheer on their favourite team. Amidst great jubilation, the Auer Weber team once again won the tournament and defended their trophy! With its fourth title win after 2016, 2018 and 2022, Auer Weber is now the sole record holder in Munich architect soccer.

This year, the BIM Award Bavaria 2023 was awarded for the first time, and we are delighted that the project "New Reception Building and New Starnberg Wing Station Building" was nominated in the "Digital Cooperation" category. Deutsche Bahn AG decided early on to use the Open BIM planning method, which includes modelling in the design disciplines of architecture, structural engineering, building services and outdoor facilities. The BIM Award Bavaria 2023 was initiated by the Bavarian Cluster of the Bavarian Ministry of Housing, Construction and Transport in the four categories "Building Refurbishment", "Digital Cooperation", "Sustainability" and "Special Commitment to Digital Business and Process Transformation". The competition aims to strengthen the digitalization drive in this area in Bavaria. A total of five winners and nine nominees in the four categories as well as the winners of the "Rural Area" and "Open BIM" special awards were recognized at the award ceremony on July 3 at Augsburg University of Applied Sciences. Last week there was something to celebrate! Together with the board of directors of the Kreissparkasse and the mayor of Leonberg, Martin Georg Cohn, our project team and other planning participants laid the foundation stone for the savings bank’s new head office building in Leonberg. In accordance with the established tradition, the stone was filled with symbolic objects as well as a current issue of the local daily newspaper. The competition design is therefore now on its way to becoming a structural reality. We look forward to successful cooperation with all those involved in the planning! The planned new building is part of a newly designed area with social housing and forms a contemporary "cornerstone" at the Sonnenkreuzung, the site of the former Oberes Tor or Upper Gate. Its shape is derived from the existing urban context. Slightly twisted, the head office building faces the Old Town, which also opens it up to the planned neighbouring residential development. Steps and recesses in the upper floors as well as the vertically structured facade with fine cornices create a striking structure. The new savings bank head office is consequently a self-confident and differentiated building with a standalone character, allowing the site to acquire its own identity. „Architecture is my life and my lifeblood, the most exciting thing I can imagine.“ (Fritz Auer) On 24 June 2023, the founder of the architecture firm Auer Weber will celebrate his 90th birthday. We congratulate him from the bottom of our hearts and wish him all the best for the years to come! Prof. Fritz Auer was born in Tübingen in 1933 and studied architecture at the TH Stuttgart and at the Cranbrook Academy of Arts in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (USA), graduating in Stuttgart in 1962. During his studies and subsequently until 1965, he worked for Behnisch and Lambart in Stuttgart and in 1965 became a partner in the office of Behnisch & Partner. In 1980, Fritz Auer and Carlo Weber broke away from the partnership and jointly founded their own office in Stuttgart, Auer+Weber+Architekten, marking the beginning of several decades of successful activity by the office at its two locations in Stuttgart and Munich. Since 2006, the company has been managed by Moritz Auer, Philipp Auer, Jörn Scholz, Achim Söding and Stephan Suxdorf. „Buildings should remain open to change, to interpretations and to users. We want buildings that can adapt to life...“ Fritz Auer has always focused on the construction task itself, as well as on the conditions and possibilities of the location in which a building is created, involving all stakeholders in the conception and realisation of each project, and this approach still shapes the attitude of the office today. Last year marked the 50th anniversary of the 1972 Munich Olympic Games and thus also of the buildings closely associated with them as well as the creation of the Olympic Park. The Olympic buildings with their striking tent roofs, for which Fritz Auer was largely responsible, inevitably rank among his major works, alongside numerous other buildings subsequently created in his office which won many prestigious architectural awards. In addition to his passion for creative architectural design and wide-ranging building tasks, Fritz Auer is equally concerned with the communication of the latter, as can be seen in his many years of teaching, and the office’snumerous publications and exhibitions. From 1985 to 2001, Fritz Auer taught architecture in Munich and Stuttgart, and since 1993 he has been a member of the Academy of Arts. In 2014, he was awarded the Leo von Klenze Medal by the Bavarian State Government. His pleasure in talking about architecture is also reflected in his publications. His most recent was "Ein Zeltdach für München. Die Verwirklichung einer Idee für Olympia 1972" ("A tent roof for Munich. The realisation of an idea for the 1972 Olympic Games"), published in 2022. To mark his 90th birthday, two new works will be published this autumn that use personal notes, diary entries, and letters to provide insights into his life as an architect and describe his life journey. Both books will be presented by Fritz Auer at two lecture events in Stuttgart and Munich, scheduled for this autumn. Nach zwei Jahren Bauzeit ist der Anbau am 22.10.2021 feierlich eingeweiht worden. Im Wettbewerbsbeitrag von 1982 definierten Auer Weber die Grundzüge des bestehenden Landratsamtes Starnberg. 1985 bis 1987 wurde das Bestandsgebäude errichtet und 1989 mit dem Deutschen Architekturpreis ausgezeichnet. Der über die 34 Jahre gestiegene Mitarbeiter*innenbedarf hatte eine Erweiterung notwendig gemacht. Das Konzept für den Anbau sah vor, dass er sowohl in seiner äußeren als auch inneren Gestalt weitestgehend dem Bestand gleicht. Ziel war es, dass die Mitarbeiter*innen und Besucher*innen das Gefühl haben, sich in einem einzigen Haus zu bewegen, und das Landratsamt durch die Erweiterung nicht in „Alt“ und „Neu“ separiert wird. Der Anbau beherbergt neben Besprechungs- und Sozialräumen 160 Arbeitsplätze und ist als KfW-55-Effizienzhaus konzipiert. Heizung und Kühlung erfolgen über eine Bauteilaktivierung. Eine Grundwasser-Wärmepumpe wird durch die neue 250kWp-Photovoltaik-Anlage versorgt und ermöglicht eine CO2-freie Wärmeerzeugung. Die neue Mühlendammbrücke ist aufgrund ihrer Lage im unmittelbaren Umfeld der historischen Mitte Berlins ein wichtiger Stadtbaustein und wesentlicher Teil der Hauptverkehrsverbindung zwischen Alexanderplatz und Potsdamer Platz. Zukünftigen Verkehrssituationen wie einer möglichen Reduzierung des motorisierten Individualverkehrs soll sie über Umgestaltungspotentiale begegnen und attraktive Aufenthalts-, Verweil- und Erlebnisorte im Stadtraum bieten. Das neue Bauwerk muss sich zum einen in seiner Ausbildung und Anbindung in ein heterogenes und kontrastreiches urbanes Umfeld einfügen, zum anderen aber auch die Entwicklung der Mühlendammbrücke von der ersten Verbindung zwischen der historischen Doppelstadt Berlin-Cölln zur vielbefahrenen Hauptverkehrsader referenzieren. Aufgrund ihres Einflusses auf das weltberühmte Panorama im denkmalgeschützten Umfeld kommt der Hauptquerung über die Spree eine ganz besondere Bedeutung zu. Die vorgeschlagene Konstruktion und Materialität der Brücke hält die Blickachsen frei und rahmt sie; andererseits schafft sie Räume und Flächen, um diese Raumbeziehungen intensiv wahrzunehmen. Die Bauhöhe wird städtebaulich niedrig gehalten, und es wird im Gegensatz zu einer vertikalen Landmarke ein horizontaler Ort generiert. Die neue Brücke verleugnet nicht ihre Identität als modernes Bauwerk, sieht sich aber zugleich in ihrer architektonischen Gestalt als rücksichtsvolle Ergänzung, die sich in der Perspektive zur Altstadt eher behutsam erklärt: ihre Tragwerksform interpretiert das historische Systems einer Bogenbrücke neu. Ausschnitt aus der Beurteilung durch das Preisgericht: „Die Brücke besticht durch ihre filigrane und sehr schlanke Konstruktion, deren Überbau als Dreifeldträger optisch voutenförmig verläuft, um die Stützmomente aufzunehmen. Die über den Zwischenstützen verlaufenden V-förmigen Streben sind räumlich geneigt ausgebildet, so dass sie auch in Querrichtung diagonal zusammenlaufen und die insgesamt 6 Hauptträger je Stützenachse von nur 3 rechteckigen Pendelstützen getragen werden. Dies führt zu einem lichtdurchlässigen und luftigen Aufenthaltsort unter der Brücke zwischen Widerlagern und Zwischenstützen.“
