ESO Hotel Cerro Paranal
In the Chilean Atacama desert, the European Southern Observatory (ESO) operates the Very Large Telescope, one of the largest telescopes on earth. Scientists, working under the extreme climatic conditions need lodging facilities that allow one to rejuvenate between the working shifts, and much like an 'oasis' the facilities must offer the necessary amenities for a prolonged stay in an otherwise uninhabitable environment. This includes interior courtyards with generous vegetation, a canteen, a fitness room and a swimming pool in addition to the sleeping quarters and working spaces.
„It's a stunning place! We were very lucky to be up there... it has been extraordinary!“
